Seguro Nacional
O Seguro Nacional no Reino Unido é um sistema de contribuições pagas por trabalhadores e empregadores quanto ao custo de certos benefícios estatais. Inicialmente, era um sistema contributivo de seguro contra doença e desemprego, e posteriormente também providenciava pensões de aposentadoria e outros benefícios. Foi introduzido pela Lei Nacional de Seguros de 1911, ampliado pelo governo trabalhista em 1948 e foi sujeito a numerosas alterações nos anos subseqüentes. O componente de contribuições do sistema, "Contribuições de Seguro Nacional", pago pelos empregados e empregadores sobre os ganhos e pelos empregadores em certos benefícios em espécie fornecidos aos empregados. Os trabalhadores independentes contribuem em parte por um pagamento fixo semanal ou mensal e, em parte, numa percentagem dos lucros líquidos acima de um certo limiar. Os indivíduos também podem fazer contribuições voluntárias, a fim de preencher uma lacuna em seu registro de contribuições e assim proteger o direito a benefícios. As contribuições são cobradas pela HM Receita e Alfândega através do sistema PAYE, juntamente com Imposto de Renda e reembolsos de Empréstimos Estudantes.
