Uma definição ostensiva transmite o significado de um termo, apontando exemplos. Esse tipo de definição é freqüentemente usado quando o termo é difícil de definir verbalmente, seja porque as palavras não serão entendidas nem pela natureza do termo. Geralmente, acompanha-se com um gesto apontando o objeto servindo como exemplo, e por esse motivo também é freqüentemente referido como "definição apontando". As definições ofensivas dependem de um raciocínio analógico ou baseado em maiúsculas e minúsculas pelo assunto a que se destinam. Por exemplo, definir "vermelho" apontando objetos vermelhos - maçãs, sinais de parada, rosas - está dando uma definição ostensiva, como é nomeando. A definição Ostensive pressupõe que o questionador tenha entendimento suficiente para reconhecer o tipo de informação que está sendo dada. Ludwig Wittgenstein escreve: Assim, pode-se dizer: a definição ostensiva explica o uso - o significado - da palavra quando o papel geral da palavra em linguagem é claro. Assim, se eu sei que alguém significa explicar uma palavra de cor para mim, a definição ostensiva "Aquilo que se chama" sépia "me ajudará a entender a palavra ....
