Panda gigante
O panda, também conhecido como urso de panda ou o panda gigante para distingui-lo do panda vermelho não relacionado, é um urso nativo do centro-sul da China. É facilmente reconhecido pelos grandes e distintos remendos pretos em torno de seus olhos, sobre as orelhas e em todo o seu corpo redondo. Embora pertença à ordem Carnivora, a dieta do panda é de mais de 99% de bambu. As pandas na natureza ocasionalmente comerão outras gramas, tubérculos selvagens ou mesmo carne na forma de aves, roedores ou carniças. Em cativeiro, eles podem receber mel, ovos, peixes, ñames, folhas de arbustos, laranjas ou bananas, juntamente com alimentos especialmente preparados. O panda gigante vive em algumas cordilheiras na China central, principalmente na província de Sichuan, mas também nas províncias de Shaanxi e Gansu. Como resultado da agricultura, o desmatamento e outros desenvolvimentos, o panda foi expulsado das terras baixas onde já havia morado. O panda é uma espécie em risco de extinção de conservação. Um relatório de 2007 mostra 239 pandas vivendo em cativeiro dentro da China e outros 27 fora do país.
