Um pendente da cúpula principal de Hagia Sophia Um pendente é um dispositivo construtivo que permite a colocação de uma cúpula circular sobre uma sala quadrada ou uma cúpula elíptica sobre uma sala retangular. Os pendentes, que são segmentos triangulares de uma esfera, se afilam em pontos na parte inferior e se espalham no topo para estabelecer a base contínua circular ou elíptica necessária para a cúpula. Em alvenaria, os pendentes recebem o peso da cúpula, concentrando-se nos quatro cantos onde pode ser recebido pelos pilares abaixo. Antes do desenvolvimento do pendente, o dispositivo de corbelling ou o uso do squinch nos cantos de uma sala tinha sido empregado. Os pendentes eram comumente usados nas igrejas ortodoxas, renascentistas e barrocas, com um tambor com janelas frequentemente inseridas entre os pendentes e a cúpula. A primeira experimentação com pendentes foi feita na construção da cúpula romana, começando no século II - 3º século, enquanto o pleno desenvolvimento da forma foi alcançado no século 6, Roman Oriental, em Santa Sofia, em Constantinopla.
