Perception

A percepção é a organização, identificação e interpretação da informação sensorial para representar e compreender o meio ambiente. Toda percepção envolve sinais no sistema nervoso, que por sua vez resultam da estimulação física ou química dos órgãos sensoriais. Por exemplo, a visão envolve a luz atingindo a retina do olho, o cheiro é mediado por moléculas de odor e a audição envolve ondas de pressão. A percepção não é o recebimento passivo desses sinais, mas é moldada pela aprendizagem, memória, expectativa e atenção. A percepção envolve esses efeitos "de cima para baixo", bem como o processo "de baixo para cima" do processamento de entrada sensorial. O processamento "de baixo para cima" transforma informações de baixo nível em informações de nível superior. O processamento "de cima para baixo" refere-se ao conceito e expectativas de uma pessoa, e mecanismos seletivos que influenciam a percepção. Perception is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical or chemical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retina of the eye, smell is mediated by odor molecules, and hearing involves pressure waves. Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but is shaped by learning, memory, expectation, and attention. Perception involves these "top-down" effects as well as the "bottom-up" process of processing sensory input. The "bottom-up" processing transforms low-level information to higher-level information. The "top-down" processing refers to a person's concept and expectations, and selective mechanisms that influence perception. Perception depends on complex functions of the nervous system, but subjectively seems mostly effortless because this processing happens outside conscious awareness. Since the rise of experimental psychology in the 19th Century, psychology's understanding of perception has progressed by combining a variety of techniques.
