Poli (metacrilato de metilo)
O poli é um termoplástico transparente usado frequentemente como uma alternativa leve ou resistente ao quebra ao vidro. Embora não seja tecnicamente um tipo de vidro, a substância às vezes historicamente foi chamada de vidro acrílico. Quimicamente, é o polímero sintético do metacrilato de metilo. O material foi desenvolvido em 1928 em vários laboratórios diferentes por muitos químicos como William Chalmers, Otto Röhm e Walter Bauer e foi trazido ao mercado pela primeira vez em 1933 pela Rohm and Haas Company, sob a marca Plexiglas. Desde então, foi vendido sob muitos nomes diferentes, incluindo Acrylite, Lucite e Perspex. O PMMA é uma alternativa econômica ao policarbonato quando a força extrema não é necessária. Além disso, o PMMA não contém as subunidades potencialmente nocivas de bisfenol-A encontradas em policarbonato. Muitas vezes é preferida devido às suas propriedades moderadas, fácil manuseio e processamento, e de baixo custo.
