O termo fonação tem significados ligeiramente diferentes dependendo do subcampo da fonética. Entre alguns fonéticos, a fonação é o processo pelo qual as dobras vocais produzem certos sons através de vibrações quase periódicas. Esta é a definição utilizada entre aqueles que estudam anatomia laríngea e fisiologia e produção de fala em geral. Os fonéticos em outros subcampos, como a fonética linguística, chamam este processo de expressões e usam o termo fonação para se referir a qualquer estado oscilatório de qualquer parte da laringe que modifica o fluxo de ar, dos quais a voz é apenas um exemplo.
