A teoria da probabilidade é o ramo da matemática preocupada com a probabilidade, a análise dos fenômenos aleatórios. Os objetos centrais da teoria da probabilidade são variáveis aleatórias, processos estocásticos e eventos: abstrações matemáticas de eventos não deterministas ou quantidades medidas que podem ser ocorrências únicas ou evoluir ao longo do tempo de forma aparentemente aleatória. Dois resultados matemáticos representativos que descrevem esses padrões são a lei dos grandes números e o teorema do limite central. Como base matemática para as estatísticas, a teoria da probabilidade é essencial para muitas atividades humanas que envolvem análise quantitativa de grandes conjuntos de dados. Métodos de teoria da probabilidade também se aplicam a descrições de sistemas complexos com apenas conhecimento parcial de seu estado, como na mecânica estatística. Uma ótima descoberta da física do século XX foi a natureza probabilística dos fenômenos físicos em escalas atômicas, descritas na mecânica quântica.
