Guerras púnicas
As Guerras Púnicas foram uma série de três guerras travadas entre Roma e Carthage de 264 aC a 146 aC. Na época, provavelmente eram as maiores guerras que já ocorreram. O termo Punic vem da palavra latina Punicus, que significa "Carthaginian", com referência à ascendência fenícia dos Carthaginois. A principal causa das Guerras Púnicas foi o conflito de interesses entre o Império Cartagineso existente e a expansão da República Romana. Os romanos inicialmente se interessaram pela expansão pela Sicília, parte da qual estava sob o controle cartagineso. No início da primeira Guerra Punica, Carthage era o poder dominante do Mediterrâneo Ocidental, com um extenso império marítimo, enquanto Roma era o poder rapidamente ascendente na Itália, mas não tinha o poder naval de Cartago. No final da terceira guerra, depois de mais de cem anos, e a perda de muitas centenas de milhares de soldados de ambos os lados, Roma conquistou o império de Carthage e destruiu completamente a cidade, tornando-se o estado mais poderoso do Mediterrâneo Ocidental.
