Quipu
Quipus, às vezes chamado de nó falante, estava gravando dispositivos historicamente utilizados na região da América do Sul dos Andes. Um quipu geralmente consistia em fios coloridos, espancados e plidos ou cordas de lama ou alpaca. Também poderia ser feito de cordões de algodão. Para o Inca, o sistema ajudou na coleta de dados e na manutenção de registros, que vão desde o monitoramento de obrigações tributárias, cobrando adequadamente registros de censos, informações de calendário e organização militar. Os cabos continham valores numéricos e outros codificados por nós em um sistema de posição base dez. Um quipu poderia ter apenas alguns ou até 2.000 cordas. A configuração do quipus também foi "comparada com mops de cordas". A evidência arqueológica também mostrou um uso de madeira finamente esculpida como uma base suplementar, e talvez mais robusta, na qual os cabos coordenados de cores seriam anexados. Objetos que podem ser identificados de forma inequívoca como quipus primeiro aparece no registro arqueológico no primeiro milênio CE. Posteriormente desempenharam um papel fundamental na administração de Tahuantinsuyu, o império controlado pelo grupo étnico inca, que floresceu nos Andes de c. 1450 a 1532 CE.
