Ele drena uma bacia hidrográfica estreita e montanhosa de 324 mil quilômetros quadrados que se estende para os países da China, Birmânia e Tailândia. As paredes do canyon íngreme alinham o Salween rápido, poderoso e sem barulho, um dos mais longos fluentes rios no mundo.
