Shell shock é a reação de alguns soldados na Primeira Guerra Mundial ao trauma da batalha. É uma reação à intensidade do bombardeio e da luta que produziu uma desamparo aparecendo várias vezes como pânico e medo ou fuga, incapacidade de argumentar, dormir, andar ou conversar. "Simplificando, depois de até mesmo o soldado mais obediente ter bastões suficientes chover nele, sem qualquer meio de lutar, ele sempre perdeu o controle de si mesmo". Durante a guerra, o conceito de choque de concha foi mal definido. Casos de "choque shell" podem ser interpretados como uma lesão física ou psicológica, ou simplesmente como uma falta de fibra moral. Enquanto o termo choque de casca não é mais usado no discurso médico ou militar, ele entrou na imaginação e memória populares, e muitas vezes é identificado como a ferida de assinatura da Guerra. "Simply put, after even the most obedient soldier had enough shells rain down on him, without any means of fighting back, he often lost all self control." During the War, the concept of shell shock was ill-defined. Cases of "shell shock" could be interpreted as either a physical or psychological injury, or simply as a lack of moral fibre. While the term shell shock is no longer used in either medical or military discourse, it has entered into popular imagination and memory, and is often identified as the signature injury of the War. In World War II and thereafter, diagnosis of "shell shock" was replaced by that of combat stress reaction, a similar but not identical response to the trauma of warfare.
