Em matemática, uma raiz quadrada de um número a é um número y tal que y2 = a, em outras palavras, um número y cujo quadrado é a. Por exemplo, 4 e -4 são raízes quadradas de 16, porque 42 = 2 = 16. Todo número real não negativo a tem uma raiz quadrada não negativa única, chamada raiz quadrada principal, que é denotada por √a, onde √ é chamado de sinal radical ou radix. Por exemplo, a raiz quadrada principal de 9 é 3, denotada √9 = 3, porque 32 = 3 × 3 = 9 e 3 não é negativa. O termo cuja raiz está sendo considerada é conhecido como radicand. O radicand é o número ou expressão abaixo do sinal radical, neste exemplo 9. Todo número positivo a tem duas raízes quadradas: √a, que é positivo e -a, o que é negativo. Juntas, essas duas raízes são denotadas ± √a. Embora a principal raiz quadrada de um número positivo seja apenas uma de suas duas raízes quadradas, a designação "a raiz quadrada" é freqüentemente usada para se referir à raiz quadrada principal.
