Superatom
Um superatom é qualquer conjunto de átomos que parecem exibir algumas das propriedades dos átomos elementares. Os átomos de sódio, quando arrefecidos a partir do vapor, condensam-se naturalmente em cachos, contendo preferencialmente um número mágico de átomos. Os dois primeiros podem ser reconhecidos como os números de elétrons necessários para preencher os primeiro e segundo conchas, respectivamente. A sugestão de superatores é que os elétrons livres no cluster ocupam um novo conjunto de orbitais que são definidos por todo o grupo de átomos, isto é, agrupamento, em vez de cada átomo individual, separadamente, os Superatoms tendem a se comportam quimicamente de uma maneira que lhes permita ter uma concha fechada de elétrons, neste novo esquema de contagem. Portanto, um superátomo com mais um elétron do que uma casca completa deve desistir desse elétron muito facilmente, semelhante a um metal alcalino, e um cluster com um elétron curto de casca completa deve ter uma grande afinidade eletrônica, como um halogênio.
