Tableless web design é uma filosofia de design web evitando o uso de tabelas HTML para fins de controle de layout de página. Em vez de tabelas HTML, as linguagens de folhas de estilo, como folhas de estilos em cascata, são usadas para organizar elementos e texto em uma página da web. O CSS foi introduzido em dezembro de 1996 pelo W3C para melhorar a acessibilidade da web e para tornar o código HTML puramente semântico em vez de apresentar. Ao mesmo tempo, no final da década de 1990, com o surgimento de um crescimento rápido na "nova mídia" de criação e design de páginas web, iniciou-se uma tendência de utilização de tabelas HTML e suas linhas, colunas e células , para controlar o layout de páginas inteiras. Isso se deveu a vários motivos: ▪ as limitações no momento do suporte ao CSS nos navegadores; ▪ a falta de familiaridade dos novos web designers com CSS; ▪ a falta de conhecimento ou preocupação com os motivos para usar o CSS em vez do que foi percebido como uma maneira mais fácil de alcançar rapidamente os layouts pretendidos, e ▪ uma nova série de ferramentas de design web WYSIWYG que incentivaram essa prática.
