Thapsus
Thapsus ou Thapsos era uma cidade antiga no que é a Tunísia moderna. Suas ruínas existem em Ras Dimas, perto de Bekalta, a aproximadamente 200 km a sudeste de Carthage. Originalmente fundada por fenícios, serviu como mercado na costa da província de Byzacena na África Propria. Thapsus foi estabelecido perto de um lago salgado em um ponto da terra oitenta estádios da ilha de Lampedusa. Em 46 aC, Júlio César derrotou Metellus Scipio e o rei Numidiano Juba com uma tremenda perda de homens perto de Thapsus. César exigiu um pagamento de 50.000 sesterces dos vencidos. Sua derrota marcou o fim da oposição a César na África. Thapsus então se tornou uma colônia romana. Mais tarde, fazia parte da província romana de Byzacena. Thapsus tornou-se um bispado cristão, cujo único bispo conhecido é Vigilius, o autor de várias obras polêmicas contra os arianos e os eutíquios. Ele foi um dos bispos católicos que em 484 Hunneric convocou para Carthage e depois exilado. A vista, não mais residencial, está incluída na lista da Igreja Católica de ver títulos.
