Um dente é uma estrutura pequena, calcificada e esbranquiçada encontrada nos maxilares de muitos vertebrados e usada para quebrar o alimento. A estrutura geral dos dentes é semelhante nos vertebrados, embora haja uma variação considerável em sua forma e posição. Os dentes de mamíferos têm raízes profundas, e esse padrão também é encontrado em alguns peixes e em crocodilianos. Na maioria dos peixes teleósticos, no entanto, os dentes estão presos à superfície externa do osso, enquanto que nos lagartos estão presos na superfície interna do maxilar por um lado. Em peixes cartilaginosos, como tubarões, os dentes são ligados por ligamentos resistentes às argolas da cartilagem que formam a mandíbula. Os dentes estão entre os traços mais distintivos das espécies de mamíferos. Os paleontologistas usam dentes para identificar espécies fósseis e determinar seus relacionamentos. A forma dos dentes do animal está relacionada à sua dieta.
