Em química, o termo metal de transição tem dois significados possíveis: ▪ A definição IUPAC define um metal de transição como "um elemento cujo átomo possui uma subcasca sub-shell parcialmente preenchida ou que pode originar catiões com uma subcascada incompleta" . ▪ A maioria dos cientistas descreve um "metal de transição" como qualquer elemento no bloco d da tabela periódica, que inclui os grupos 3 a 12 na tabela periódica. Na prática real, as séries de lantanídeos e actinídeos de bloqueio f também são considerados metais de transição e são chamadas de "metais de transição interna". Jensen analisa a história dos termos "elemento de transição" e "bloco d". A transição da palavra foi usada pela primeira vez para descrever os elementos agora conhecidos como d-block pelo químico inglês Charles Bury em 1921, que se referia a uma série de transição de elementos durante a mudança de uma camada interna de elétrons de um grupo estável de 8 para um dos 18 ou de 18 a 32.
