Channel surfing é a prática de escanear rapidamente através de diferentes canais de televisão ou freqüências de rádio para encontrar algo interessante para assistir ou ouvir. Os espectadores modernos, que podem ter serviços por cabo ou por satélite, transmitindo dezenas, se não centenas ou milhares de canais, freqüentemente são canais de navegação. É comum que as pessoas digitalizem os canais quando as emissoras comerciais passam de um show para publicar anúncios. O termo é mais comumente associado à televisão, onde a prática tornou-se comum com a ampla disponibilidade do controle remoto. O primeiro uso publicado do termo é novembro de 1986, em um artigo de The Wall Street Journal. O termo tem algumas conotações relacionadas à preguiça, inatividade e hiperatividade. O comportamento em si também pode sugerir transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade. A propensão dos espectadores ao canal de surf foi aparentemente um fator que levou ao atual padrão ATSC para a televisão terrestre, a televisão digital na América do Norte. Um sinal ATSC pode ser bloqueado e começar a ser descodificado em cerca de um segundo, enquanto pode levar vários segundos para começar a decodificar um sinal de transmissão de vídeo digital.

Channel surfing is the practice of quickly scanning through different television channels or radio frequencies to find something interesting to watch or listen to. Modern viewers, who may have cable or satellite services beaming down dozens if not hundreds or thousands of channels, are frequently channel surfing. It is common for people to scan channels when commercial broadcasters switch from a show over to running advertisements. The term is most commonly associated with television, where the practice became common with the wide availability of the remote control. The first published use of the term is November 1986, in an article by The Wall Street Journal. The term has some connotations relating to laziness, inattentiveness, and hyperactivity. The behavior itself may also suggest attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Viewers' propensity to channel surf was apparently a factor leading toward the current ATSC standard for terrestrial television, digital television in North America. An ATSC signal can be locked onto and start being decoded within about one second, while it can take several seconds to begin decoding a Digital Video Broadcasting signal.
