O tanque - um veículo de combate rastreado, projetado para combater as forças do inimigo a distâncias curtas e médias por fogo direto. Armaduras pesadas e alta mobilidade permitem que os tanques sobrevivam no campo de batalha e o rooteador permite viagens de alta velocidade em terrenos difíceis. O tanque é o principal meio de conduzir uma batalha terrestre, especialmente o ataque. A maioria dos tanques modernos são armados com uma única arma de tanque, montada em uma torre rotativa e em uma ou mais metralhadoras. O corpo do tanque é feito de chapas blindadas de espessura variável. Os primeiros tanques não tinham uma torre e seu armamento de artilharia foi colocado no patrocínio, o primeiro tanque da construção clássica e atualmente usada foi o francês Renault FT-17. O protótipo do tanque foi desenvolvido na Inglaterra em 1915, embora o primeiro desses veículos tenha sido projetado em 1911 pelo austríaco Günther Burstyn e independentemente do engenheiro australiano Lancelot De Mole, mas suas idéias foram ignoradas pelo então estabelecimento militar.

Ciężki pancerz i duża mobilność zapewniają czołgom przetrwanie na polu bitwy, a napęd gąsienicowy pozwala na przemieszczanie się z dużą prędkością w trudnym terenie. Czołg jest zasadniczym środkiem prowadzenia walki lądowej, zwłaszcza natarcia. Większość współczesnych czołgów jest uzbrojonych w pojedynczą armatę czołgową, umieszczoną w obrotowej wieży oraz w jeden lub więcej karabinów maszynowych. Korpus czołgu wykonany jest z pancernych płyt o zróżnicowanej grubości. Pierwsze czołgi nie posiadały wieży, a ich uzbrojenie artyleryjskie było umieszczone w sponsonach, pierwszym czołgiem o klasycznej i używanej obecnie konstrukcji był francuski Renault FT-17. Prototyp czołgu opracowano w Anglii w roku 1915, choć pierwszy taki pojazd zaprojektował już w 1911 Austriak Günther Burstyn i niezależnie od niego australijski inżynier Lancelot De Mole, ale ich pomysły zostały zignorowane przez ówczesny establishment wojskowy.
