Transit

Trânsito, também NAVSAT, NNSS - o primeiro sistema operacional de navegação por satélite. Usado originalmente pela Marinha dos EUA para determinar a posição por submarinos com mísseis balísticos Polaris, mais tarde por navios de superfície, e em 1967 foi disponibilizado para usuários civis. Foi utilizado, inter alia. na navegação e para fins hidrográficos e geodésicos. O sistema foi desenvolvido pelo Laboratório de Física Aplicada, parte da Universidade Johns Hopkins, por ordem da Marinha dos EUA. Os primeiros testes bem sucedidos foram feitos em 1960, em 1964 entrou em operação. Os satélites são colocados em órbitas polares de baixa órbita a uma altitude de cerca de 1100 km acima da superfície da Terra. O período de circulação de satélites em torno da Terra foi de cerca de 106 minutos. Uma constelação de cinco satélites era necessária para garantir cobertura global. Durante o funcionamento normal do sistema em órbita, 10 satélites foram mantidos. Devido às suas deficiências, o sistema de trânsito foi substituído pelo GPS e encerrou sua operação em 1996, embora seus satélites ainda fossem utilizados para outros fins.

Używany początkowo przez Marynarkę Wojenną USA do określania pozycji przez okręty podwodne z pociskami balistycznymi typu Polaris, później również przez okręty nawodne, a w 1967 udostępniono go użytkownikom cywilnym. Wykorzystywano go m.in. w żegludze oraz do celów hydrograficznych i geodezyjnych. System został opracowany przez Applied Physics Laboratory, część Johns Hopkins University na zamówienie Marynarki Wojennej USA. Pierwszych pomyślnych testów dokonano w 1960, w 1964 Transit wszedł do eksploatacji. Satelity umieszczano na niskich orbitach okołobiegunowych na wysokości około 1100 km nad powierzchnią Ziemi. Okres obiegu satelity wokół Ziemi wynosił ok. 106 minut. Do zapewnienia globalnego zasięgu systemu potrzebna była konstelacja pięciu satelitów. W okresie normalnej działalności systemu na orbicie było utrzymywanych 10 satelitów. Ze względu na swoje wady system Transit został zastąpiony przez GPS i zakończył działalność w roku 1996, choć jego satelity wykorzystywano nadal do innych celów.
