Var. hățiș, hațiș, hataș, hățag. Origine incertă. Pare a fi formație expresivă, pe baza lui
hăț, care exprimă ideea de „a pleca, a devia”, caz în care ar însemna „(drum) lateral” sau „scurtătură”. Totuși, sensul special de „hățiș”,
s. n. (desiș, tufișuri), se potrivește doar în parte acestei ipoteze. Scriban propune
germ. hetzen „a ațîța”, care nu pare mai probabil. După Moldovan 426, de la
hat, „drum”, care nu apare cu acest sens; în afară de aceasta,
