Almagest
Almagest este un tratat matematic și astronomic din secolul al II-lea cu privire la mișcările aparente ale stelelor și ale căilor planetare. Scrisă în limba greacă de Claudius Ptolemy, un învățat al erei romane din Egipt, este unul dintre cele mai influente texte științifice ale tuturor timpurilor, modelul său geocentric fiind acceptat pentru mai mult de douăsprezece sute de ani de la originea sa în Alexandria elenă, în bizantina medievală și Lumi islamice și în Europa Occidentală, prin Evul Mediu și Renașterea timpurie până la Copernic. Almagest este sursa critică de informații despre astronomia antică grecească. A fost, de asemenea, valoroasă pentru studenții de matematică, deoarece documentează lucrarea matematicianului grecesc antic Hipparchus, care a fost pierdută. Hipparchus a scris despre trigonometrie, dar deoarece lucrările sale nu mai există, matematicienii folosesc cartea lui Ptolemeu ca sursă pentru lucrarea lui Hipparchus și pentru trigonometria antică grecească în general.
