Altruismul sau altruismul este principiul sau practica îngrijorării pentru bunăstarea celorlalți. Este o virtute tradițională în multe culturi și un aspect fundamental al diferitelor tradiții religioase și al viziunilor seculare ale lumii, deși conceptul de "alții" față de care ar trebui să fie îndreptățit poate varia între culturi și religii. Altruismul sau altruismul este opusul egoismului. Altruismul poate fi distins de sentimentele loialității. Altruismul pur constă în a sacrifica ceva pentru altcineva decât pentru sine, fără nici o așteptare de nici o compensație sau beneficii, fie directe, fie indirecte. Există o mare dezbatere cu privire la faptul dacă este posibil altruismul "adevărat". Teoria egoismului psihologic sugerează că nici un act de împărțire, ajutorare sau sacrificare nu poate fi descris ca fiind cu adevărat altruist, deoarece actorul poate primi o recompensă intrinsecă sub formă de satisfacție personală. Valabilitatea acestui argument depinde de faptul dacă recompensele intrinseci se califică drept "beneficii". Termenul altruism se poate referi și la o doctrină etică care susține că indivizii sunt obligați din punct de vedere moral să beneficieze pe ceilalți.
