Arbitrajul este un termen acordat alegerilor și acțiunilor care sunt supuse voinței, judecății sau preferinței individuale, bazate exclusiv pe opinia sau discreția unui individ. Deciziile arbitrare nu sunt neapărat aceleași ca deciziile aleatoare. De exemplu, în timpul crizei petrolului din 1973, americanilor li sa permis să achiziționeze benzină numai în zilele impare, dacă plăcuța de înmatriculare a fost ciudată, iar în zilele de eveniment dacă plăcuța de înmatriculare a fost uniformă.
