Atomismul este o filozofie naturală care sa dezvoltat în mai multe tradiții antice. Atomiștii au susținut că natura constă în două principii fundamentale: atom și vid. Spre deosebire de omologul lor științific modern din teoria atomică, atomii filozofi vin într-o varietate infinită de forme și dimensiuni, fiecare indestructibil, imutabil și înconjurat de un gol în care acestea se ciocnesc cu ceilalți sau se cuplează împreună formând un cluster. Clusterele de diferite forme, aranjamente și poziții dau naștere la diferitele substanțe macroscopice din lume. Referințele la conceptul de atomism și atomii săi se găsesc în India antică și Grecia antică. În India, școlile atomice din Jain, Ajivika și Carvaka pot să dateze din secolul VI î.en. Școlile Nyaya și Vaisheshika au dezvoltat mai târziu teorii despre modul în care atomii se combină în obiecte mai complexe. În Vest, atomismul a apărut în secolul al V-lea î.en cu Leucippus și Democritus. Indiferent dacă cultura indiană a influențat greaca sau viceversa sau dacă ambele au evoluat independent, este o problemă de dispută.
