Autocefalia este statutul unei biserici creștine ierarhice, al cărei șef episcop nu se raportează unui episcop superior. Când un consiliu ecumenic sau un episcop de rang înalt, cum ar fi un patriarh sau alt primat, eliberează o provincie ecleziastică din autoritatea acelui episcop, în timp ce noua biserică independentă rămâne în comuniune deplină cu ierarhia căreia îi încetează să mai aparțină, consiliul sau primatul acordă autocefalie. De exemplu, Biserica Ortodoxă cipriotă a primit autocefalia de către Consiliul Canonic al Efesului, fiind condusă de Arhiepiscopul Ciprului, care nu este supus nici unei autorități ecleziastice superioare, deși biserica sa rămâne în comuniune deplină cu celelalte biserici ortodoxe răsăritene. Problema cine poate acorda autocefalie este o problemă controversată; în special, Biserica Ortodoxă din America a primit autocefalie de către Biserica Ortodoxă Rusă în 1970, dar nu a fost recunoscută de majoritatea patriarhilor.
