Un azeotrop este un amestec de două sau mai multe lichide ale căror proporții nu pot fi modificate prin distilare simplă. Acest lucru se întâmplă deoarece, atunci când un azeotrop este fiert, vaporii au aceleași proporții de constituenți ca și amestecul fără fiert. Deoarece compoziția lor este neschimbată prin distilare, azeotropii sunt numiți și amestecuri de fierbere constante. Cuvântul azeotrop este derivat din cuvintele grecești ζέειν și τρόπος combinate cu prefixul α - pentru a da înțelesul general, "fără nici o schimbare la fierbere". Au fost documentate amestecuri azeotropice de perechi de compuși și sunt cunoscute și multe azeotrope cu trei sau mai mulți compuși. Acestea sunt amestecuri binare având aceeași compoziție în fază lichidă și vapori și se fierbe la o temperatură constantă. Într-un astfel de caz nu este posibilă separarea componentelor prin distilare fracționată. Există două tipuri de azeotropuri: azeotrop cu punct de fierbere minim și azeotrop maxim de fierbere. O soluție care demonstrează o abatere pozitivă mai mare față de legea lui Raoult formează un azeotrop fierbinte minim la o compoziție specifică.
