Bacillus este un gen de gram-pozitive, în formă de tijă, bacterii și un membru al phylum Firmicutes. Speciile de Bacillus pot fi obligate la aerobi sau la anaerobii facultativi. Ei vor testa pozitiv pentru enzima catalază atunci când a existat oxigen utilizat sau prezent. În natură omniprezentă, Bacillus include atât specii patogene libere, cât și parazite patogene. În condițiile de mediu stresante, bacteriile pot produce endospori ovale care nu sunt spori adevărați, dar pe care bacteriile le pot reduce și rămân într-o stare în starea de inactivitate pentru perioade foarte lungi. Aceste caracteristici au definit inițial genul, dar nu toate aceste specii sunt strâns legate, iar multe au fost mutate în alte genuri de Firmicutes. Multe specii de Bacillus pot produce cantități abundente de enzime care sunt utilizate în diferite industrii. Unele specii de Bacillus pot forma incluziuni intracelulare de polihidroxialcanoați în anumite condiții de mediu nefavorabile, cum ar fi lipsa elementelor cum ar fi fosforul, azotul sau oxigenul combinat cu o sursă excesivă de surse de carbon. B.subtilis sa dovedit un model valoros pentru cercetare.
