În etimologie, back-formarea este procesul de creare a unei noi lexeme, de obicei prin eliminarea aplicațiilor reale sau presupuse. Neologismul rezultat este numit o formațiune back-up, un termen inventat de James Murray în 1889. Formarea înapoi este diferită de tăiere - formarea înapoi poate schimba partea de vorbire sau sensul cuvântului, în timp ce tăierea creează cuvinte scurtate din cuvinte mai lungi, dar nu schimbă partea de vorbire sau sensul cuvântului. De exemplu, învierea substantivului a fost împrumutată din latină, iar verbul înviat a fost apoi transformat cu sute de ani mai târziu din ea prin îndepărtarea sufixului ionic. Această segmentare a învierii în ionul înviat a fost posibilă deoarece engleza a avut exemple de cuvinte latine în formă de perechi de verb și verb + -ion, cum ar fi opinia / opiniile.
