O bancă rea este o structură corporativă creată de o bancă cu probleme pentru a izola valorile mobiliare nelichide și cu risc ridicat. O bancă poate acumula un portofoliu mare de datorii sau alte instrumente financiare care cresc în mod neașteptat în ceea ce privește riscul, ceea ce face dificilă acumularea de capital de către bancă, de exemplu prin vânzarea de obligațiuni. În aceste condiții, banca ar putea dori să-și separe activele "bune" de activele sale "rele" prin crearea unei bănci rău. Scopul segregării este de a permite investitorilor să evalueze sănătatea financiară a băncii cu o mai mare certitudine. Pe lângă separarea sau înlăturarea activelor necorespunzătoare din bilanțul băncii mamă, o structură bancară necorespunzătoare permite o gestionare mai specializată. Banca bună se poate concentra asupra activității sale principale de creditare, iar banca rea se poate specializa în maximizarea valorii din activele cu risc ridicat. Astfel de instituții au fost create pentru a aborda provocările apărute în timpul unei crize economice a creditelor, pentru a permite băncilor private să scoată activele problematice din cărțile lor. Criza financiară din 2007-2010 a avut ca rezultat crearea unor bănci rău în mai multe țări.
