Bathysphere
Bathysphere (cuvintele grecești βάθσου (bathus), "adânc" și σφαίρα (sphaira), "sferă") este un submersibil sferic de mare adâncime care a fost răsturnat și coborât în ocean printr-un cablu și a fost folosit pentru a efectua o serie de scufundă în largul coastelor Bermudei între 1930 și 1934. Bathysphere a fost proiectat în 1928 și 1929 de inginerul american Otis Barton, pentru a fi folosit de naturalistul William Beebe pentru studiul vieții sălbatice submarine. Beebe și Barton au făcut împreună scufundări în Bathysphere, marcând pentru prima dată că un biolog marin a observat animale de adâncime în mediul lor nativ. Scufundările lor au stabilit mai multe înregistrări mondiale consecutive pentru cea mai adâncă scufundare efectuată vreodată de un om. Recordul celor mai adânci dintre aceștia, la o adâncime de 3028 de picioare pe 15 august 1934, a durat până când a fost întrerupt de Barton în 1949.
