Software-ul este un proces prin care versiunile succesive ale unui program de calculator devin perceptibil mai lent, utilizează mai multă memorie / spațiu pe disc sau putere de procesare sau au cerințe hardware mai mari decât versiunea anterioară făcând doar îmbunătățiri dubioase ale utilizatorilor perceptibile. Termenul nu este aplicat în mod consecvent; este adesea folosit ca peiorativ de către utilizatorii finali pentru a descrie schimbările nedorite ale interfeței utilizator, chiar dacă aceste modificări au avut un efect redus sau nu asupra cerințelor hardware. În software-ul cu durată de viață lungă, perceperea umflată poate apărea din cauza software-ului care deservesc o piață mare, diversă, cu multe cerințe diferite. Majoritatea utilizatorilor finali vor simți că au nevoie doar de un anumit subset limitat de funcții disponibile și îi vor considera pe ceilalți ca fiind inutili, chiar dacă oamenii cu cerințe diferite le folosesc. Bloatul actual poate apărea datorită faptului că nu se pune accentul pe eficiența software în favoarea altor preocupări, cum ar fi productivitatea dezvoltatorului sau, eventual, prin introducerea unor noi straturi de abstractizare, cum ar fi o mașină virtuală sau alt motor de scripting, pentru scopuri de confort atunci când constrângerile dezvoltatorului sunt reduse.
