Calif
Califul este șeful statului într-un califat și titlul de conducător al Ummahului islamic, o comunitate islamică condusă de Shari'ah. Cuvântul derivă din arabul خليفة Khalīfa. După moartea lui Mohamed în 632, liderii timpurii ai națiunii musulmane au fost numiți Khalifat Rasul Allah, succesorii politici ai mesagerului lui Dumnezeu. Unii academicieni preferă să translitereze termenul ca Khalīfah. Un Calipha este fie un calif feminin, fie o soție sau văduvă a unui calif. Există un exemplu cunoscut în istorie că un caliph a condus un califat: Sitt al-Mulk a fost regent al califatului Fatimid din 1021 până în 1023. Unii califi, cum ar fi Zaynab an-Nafzawiyyah și Al-Khayzuran bint Atta, au avut o mare influență în tribunale ale soților lor.
