Cicatricile sunt zone de țesut fibros care înlocuiesc pielea normală după leziuni. O cicatrice rezultă din procesul biologic al reparării rănilor în piele și în alte țesuturi ale corpului. Astfel, cicatrizarea este o parte naturala a procesului de vindecare. Cu excepția leziunilor foarte minore, fiecare rană are un anumit grad de cicatrizare. O excepție este animalele cu regenerare completă, care întăresc țesutul fără formare de cicatrici. Scutul țesutului este compus din aceeași proteină ca țesutul pe care îl înlocuiește, dar compoziția fibrelor a proteinei este diferită; în loc de formarea întâmplătoare a coșului de colagen a fibrelor de colagen găsite în țesuturile normale, în fibroză legăturile încrucișate de colagen și formează o aliniere pronunțată într-o singură direcție. Un infarct miocardic, cunoscut sub numele de atac de cord, cauzează formarea de cicatrici în mușchiul inimii, ceea ce duce la pierderea puterii musculare și posibil a insuficienței cardiace.
