Civilizaţie
Civilizația sau civilizația se referă în general la politicile de stat care combină aceste instituții de bază, având unul sau mai multe dintre ele: un centru ceremonial, un sistem de scriere și un oraș. Termenul este folosit pentru a contrasta cu alte tipuri de comunități, inclusiv vânătorii-colectori, pastoraliștii nomazi și satele tribale. Civilizațiile au așezări mai dens populate, împărțite în clase sociale ierarhice, cu o elite dominante și populații urbane și rurale subordonate, care, prin diviziunea muncii, se angajează în agricultură intensivă, minieră, producție la scară mică și comerț. Civilizația concentrează puterea, extinzând controlul uman atât asupra naturii, cât și asupra altor ființe umane. Apariția civilizației este în general asociată cu etapele finale ale Revoluției neolitice, un proces cumulat lent, care se produce independent în multe locuri între 10.000 și 3.000 î.Hr., culminând cu procesul relativ rapid de formare a statului, o dezvoltare politică asociată cu apariția unei care guvernează elita.
