Cloud computing este un termen folosit pentru a se referi la un model de rețea în care un program sau o aplicație rulează pe un server sau servere conectate, mai degrabă decât pe un dispozitiv local de calcul cum ar fi un PC, tabletă sau smartphone. La fel ca modelul tradițional client-server sau calculatorul mainframe mai vechi, un utilizator se conectează cu un server pentru a efectua o sarcină. Diferența față de cloud computing este că procesul de calcul poate fi rulat pe unul sau mai multe computere conectate în același timp, folosind conceptul de virtualizare. Cu ajutorul virtualizării, unul sau mai multe servere fizice pot fi configurate și împărțite în mai multe servere "virtuale" independente, toate funcționând independent și aparținând utilizatorului ca fiind un singur dispozitiv fizic. Astfel de servere virtuale sunt, în esență, disociate de serverul lor fizic și, cu această flexibilitate adăugată, pot fi deplasate și scalate în sus sau în jos fără a afecta utilizatorul final. Resursele de calcul au devenit "granulare", ceea ce oferă beneficii utilizatorilor și operatorilor, inclusiv auto-service la cerere, acces larg pe mai multe dispozitive, pooling de resurse, elasticitate rapidă și capacitate de măsurare a serviciilor.
