În mitologia greacă, Deucalion era fiul lui Prometheus; surse antice îi numesc pe mama lui ca Clymene, Hesione sau Pronoia. Mânia lui Zeus a fost aprinsă de hubrisul pelasgienilor, deci a decis să pună capăt epocii bronzului. Lycaon, regele Arcadiei, a sacrificat un baiat lui Zeus, care a fost înspăimântat de această ofranță sălbatică. Zeus a dezlănțuit un potop, astfel încât râurile au alergat în torenți, iar marea a inundat câmpia de coastă, a înghițit podeaua cu spray și a spălat totul curat. Deucalion, cu ajutorul tatălui său, Prometheus, a fost salvat din acest potop prin construirea unui piept. Ca și omul biblic Noe și omologul său mesopotamian Utnapishtim, el folosește dispozitivul său pentru a supraviețui în potop cu soția sa, Pyrrha.
