O dihotomie este orice divizare a unui întreg în exact două părți care nu se suprapun, adică este o procedură în care un întreg este împărțit în două părți. Este o împărțire a unui întreg în două părți care sunt: ▪ exhaustiv în totalitate: totul trebuie să aparțină unei părți sau altuia și ▪ se exclud reciproc: nimic nu poate aparține simultan ambelor părți. O astfel de partiție este, de asemenea, deseori numită bipartiție. Cele două părți astfel formate sunt complementare. În logică, partițiile sunt opuse în cazul în care există o propoziție de așa natură încât aceasta să dețină una și nu cealaltă.
