Difracția se referă la diverse fenomene care apar când un val întâlnește un obstacol sau o fantezie. În fizica clasică, fenomenul de difracție este descris ca interferența undelor în conformitate cu principiul Huygens Fresnel. Aceste comportamente caracteristice sunt expuse atunci când o undă întâlnește un obstacol sau o fantă care este comparabilă în mărime cu lungimea de undă. Efecte similare apar atunci când o undă luminoasă se deplasează printr-un mediu cu un indice de refracție variabil sau când o undă sonoră se deplasează printr-un mediu cu impedanță acustică variabilă. Difracția are loc cu toate valurile, inclusiv undele sonore, undele de apă și undele electromagnetice cum ar fi lumina vizibilă, razele X și undele radio. Diffraction refers to various phenomena which occur when a wave encounters an obstacle or a slit. In classical physics, the diffraction phenomenon is described as the interference of waves according the Huygens Fresnel principle. These characteristic behaviors are exhibited when a wave encounters an obstacle or a slit that is comparable in size to its wavelength. Similar effects occur when a light wave travels through a medium with a varying refractive index, or when a sound wave travels through a medium with varying acoustic impedance. Diffraction occurs with all waves, including sound waves, water waves, and electromagnetic waves such as visible light, X-rays and radio waves. Since physical objects have wave-like properties, diffraction also occurs with matter and can be studied according to the principles of quantum mechanics. Italian scientist Francesco Maria Grimaldi coined the word "diffraction" and was the first to record accurate observations of the phenomenon in 1660.
