În electronică, o diodă este o componentă electronică cu două terminale cu conductanță asimetrică; are rezistență scăzută la curent într-o direcție, și rezistență ridicată în cealaltă. O diodă semiconductoră, cea mai comună de astăzi, este o piesă cristalină de material semiconductor cu o joncțiune p-n conectată la două terminale electrice. O diodă tubulară vidă are doi electrozi, o placă și un catod încălzit. Diodele semiconductoare au fost primele dispozitive electronice semiconductoare. Descoperirea abilităților rectificatoare ale cristalelor a fost făcută de fizicianul german Ferdinand Braun în 1874. Primele diode semiconductoare, numite diode de whisker de pisică, au fost dezvoltate în jurul anului 1906, au fost făcute din cristale minerale, cum ar fi galena. Astăzi, majoritatea diodelor sunt fabricate din siliciu, dar sunt folosite uneori și alte semiconductori cum ar fi seleniul sau germaniul.
