O economie sau un sistem economic constă în producerea, distribuția sau comerțul și consumul de bunuri și servicii limitate de diferiți agenți într-o anumită locație geografică. Agenții economici pot fi indivizi, întreprinderi, organizații sau guverne. Tranzacțiile apar atunci când două părți sunt de acord cu valoarea sau prețul bunului sau serviciului tranzacționat, exprimate în mod obișnuit într-o anumită monedă. În trecut, activitatea economică a fost considerată a fi limitată de resursele naturale, de forța de muncă și de capital. Această viziune ignoră valoarea tehnologiei și a inovării, în special a celei care produce proprietatea intelectuală. O economie dată este rezultatul unui set de procese care implică cultura, valorile, educația, evoluția tehnologică, istoria, organizarea socială, structura politică și sistemele juridice, precum și geografia, dotarea cu resurse naturale și ecologia, ca factori principali .
