Probabilitatea empirică, cunoscută și ca frecvență relativă sau probabilitate experimentală, este raportul dintre numărul de rezultate în care apare un anumit eveniment la numărul total de încercări, nu într-un spațiu eșantionator teoretic, ci într-un experiment real. Într-un sens mai general, probabilitatea empirică estimează probabilitățile din experiență și observație. În termeni statistici, probabilitatea empirică este o estimare sau estimare a unei probabilități. În cazuri simple, în cazul în care rezultatul unei încercări determină numai dacă evenimentul specificat sau nu a avut loc, modelarea utilizând o distribuție binomială ar putea fi adecvată, iar apoi estimarea empirică este estimarea maximă a probabilității. Este estimarea Bayesiană pentru același caz dacă se fac anumite ipoteze pentru distribuirea prealabilă a probabilității. Dacă o încercare dă mai multe informații, probabilitatea empirică poate fi îmbunătățită prin adoptarea unor ipoteze suplimentare sub forma unui model statistic: dacă un astfel de model este montat, acesta poate fi folosit pentru a obține o estimare a probabilității evenimentului specificat.
