În geometria diferențială a curbelor, evoluția unei curbe este locusul tuturor centrelor de curbură. Aceasta înseamnă că atunci când centrul curburii fiecărui punct pe o curbă este desenat, forma rezultantă va fi evoluția curbei respective. Evoluția unui cerc este așadar un punct unic în centrul său. Echivalent, un evolut este plicul normalelor la o curbă. Evoluția unei curbe, a unei suprafețe sau, mai general, a unui submanifold, este caustica hărții normale. Fie M un submanifold neted, regulat în Rn. Pentru fiecare punct p din M și fiecare vector v, bazat la p și normal la M, asociază punctul p + v. Aceasta definește o hartă Lagrangiană, numită hartă normală. Caustica hărții normale este evoluția lui M.
