O familie extinsă este o familie care se extinde dincolo de familia imediată, formată din bunicii, mătușile, unchii și verișorii, care trăiesc în apropiere sau în aceeași gospodărie. Un exemplu este un cuplu căsătorit care trăiește fie cu soțul, fie cu părinții soției. Familia se transformă de la gospodăria imediată la gospodăria extinsă.
