Derivat
Derivatul unei funcții a unei variabile reale măsoară sensibilitatea la schimbarea unei cantități determinate de o altă cantitate. Este un instrument fundamental al calculului. De exemplu, derivatul poziției unui obiect în mișcare în funcție de timp este viteza obiectului: aceasta măsoară cât de repede se schimbă poziția obiectului atunci când timpul avansează. Derivatul măsoară rata instantanee de schimbare a funcției, diferită de rata medie de schimbare și este definită ca limita ratei medii de schimbare a funcției, deoarece lungimea intervalului pe care se calculează media tinde să zero. Derivatul unei funcții la o valoare de intrare aleasă descrie cea mai bună aproximare liniară a funcției în apropierea acelei valori de intrare. De fapt, derivatul într-un punct al unei funcții a unei singure variabile este panta liniei tangente la graficul funcției în acel punct. Noțiunea de derivat poate fi generalizată la funcțiile mai multor variabile reale. Derivatul generalizat este o hartă liniară numită diferențial.
