Lungimea focală a unui sistem optic este o măsură a modului în care sistemul converge sau diverge lumina. Pentru un sistem optic în aer, este distanța pe care razele colimate inițial sunt aduse la foc. Un sistem cu o distanță focală mai mică are o putere optică mai mare decât una cu o lungime focală lungă; adică, îndoaie razele mai puternic, apropiindu-le de o distanță mai scurtă. În majoritatea fotografiilor și în toată telescopia, unde subiectul este în esență infinit de departe, lungimea focală mai lungă duce la o mărire mai mare și un unghi de vedere mai îngust; dimpotrivă, o lungime focală mai scurtă sau o putere optică mai mare este asociată cu un unghi de vedere mai larg. Pe de altă parte, în aplicații precum microscopia în care se obține mărirea prin aducerea obiectului în apropierea lentilei, o distanță focală mai scurtă duce la o mărire mai mare deoarece subiectul poate fi adus mai aproape de centrul proiecției.
