Fructificarea sunt părțile generatoare ale plantei. Uneori este aplicată pe scară largă părților generatoare ale gimnospermelor, ferigilor, coapsei și lycophytelor, deși nu produc nici fructe, nici flori. De la lucrările lui Andrea Caesalpino, personajele fructificării au fost utilizate pe scară largă ca bază pentru clasificarea științifică a plantelor. Carolus Linnaeus a ridicat descrierea părților fructificării la un nivel de precizie fără precedent. El a insistat că genurile și grupurile superioare de plante trebuie să fie caracterizate doar prin fructificare, fără a utiliza părți vegetative. La acea vreme se credea că toate plantele au flori și fructe. Numai până în secolul al XIX-lea sa recunoscut diferența importantă dintre semințe și spori, iar utilizarea termenilor flori și fructe a fost limitată la plantele cu flori. Ulterior, taxonomii de plante au folosit o abordare mai echilibrată și au reintrodus utilizarea părților vegetative ale plantei ca bază pentru personaje la diferite niveluri ale ierarhiei taxonomice.

Fructification are the generative parts of the plant . Sometimes it is applied more broadly to the generative parts of gymnosperms, ferns, horsetails, and lycophytes, though they produce neither fruit nor flower. Since the works of Andrea Caesalpino the characters of fructification have been extensively used as a basis for the scientific classification of plants. Carolus Linnaeus raised the description of the parts of fructification to an unprecedented level of precision. He insisted that genera and the higher groups of plants must be characterised in terms of the fructification alone without using vegetative parts. At that time it was believed that all plants have flowers and fruits. It was not until the nineteenth century that the important difference between seeds and spores was recognised and the use of terms flower and fruit was restricted to the flowering plants. Later plant taxonomists used a more balanced approach and re-introduced the use of the vegetative parts of the plant as a basis for characters at different levels of taxonomic hierarchy.
