Forțele speciale ale armatei americane, cunoscute sub denumirea de "Beretele verzi" din cauza capului lor de serviciu distinctiv, sunt o forță specială de operațiuni însărcinată cu cinci misiuni primare: război neconvențional, apărare internă străină, recunoaștere specială, acțiune directă și contra-terorism. Primele două subliniază competențele lingvistice, culturale și de formare în lucrul cu trupele străine. Printre alte atribuții se numără cercetarea și salvarea combaterii, combaterea narcoticelor, contra-proliferarea, salvarea de ostatici, asistența umanitară, deminarea umanitară, operațiunile de informare, menținerea păcii, operațiunile psihologice, asistența pentru securitate și omul de serviciu; alte componente ale Comandamentului Operațiunilor Speciale ale Statelor Unite ale Americii sau alte activități guvernamentale din S.U.A. pot, de asemenea, să se specializeze în aceste zone secundare. Multe dintre tehnicile lor operaționale sunt clasificate, însă sunt disponibile și câteva lucrări nonficiale și manuale doctrinare. Ca unități de operațiuni speciale, forțele speciale nu se află neapărat sub autoritatea de comandă a comandanților de la sol din acele țări. În schimb, în timp ce în teatru, unitățile SF pot raporta direct la o comandă geografică de comandant, USSOCOM sau alte autorități de comandă.
