Sfântul Graal
Sfântul Graal este un farfurie, placă, piatră sau pahar care face parte dintr-o temă importantă a literaturii arthuriene. Un grai, minunat, dar nu explicit sfânt, apare pentru prima dată în Perceval le Gallois, o poveste neterminată de Chrétien de Troyes: este un salvator procesional folosit pentru a servi la o sărbătoare. Istoria lui Chrétien a atras mulți continuatori, traducători și interpreți în secolele XII-XII și începutul secolului al XIII-lea, inclusiv Wolfram von Eschenbach, care face ca graalul să fie o mare piatră prețioasă care a căzut de pe cer. Legenda lui Graal a devenit întrețesută cu legendele Sfântului Poal. Legătura cu Iosif din Arimatea și cu navele asociate cu Cina cea de Taină și crucificarea lui Isus, datează din Joseph d'Arimathie de la Robert de Boron, în care Iosif primește Graalul dintr-o apariție a lui Isus și îl trimite cu urmașii săi în Marea Britanie. Bazându-se pe această temă, scriitorii mai târziu au povestit cum Iosif a folosit Graalul pentru a prinde sângele lui Hristos în timp ce îl intersecta și cum a întemeiat o linie de gardieni pentru ao menține în siguranță în Marea Britanie. Legenda poate combina istoria creștină cu un mit celtic al unui cazan înzestrat cu puteri speciale.
